The Newfoundland Quarterly began publishing in 1901, when Newfoundland was an independent country. It is the province’s oldest magazine, and the second oldest in Canada. The Quarterly is now owned by Memorial University and is published through the Newfoundland Quarterly Foundation, established in 1982.

Founder John J. Evans called the Quarterly “a literary magazine of interest to Newfoundlanders at home and abroad”, and from start to present it has included features, columns, interviews and Reviews concerning the history and culture (broadly defined) of Newfoundland and Labrador. Its content is designed to be accessible to a general readership.
